DESCRIPTION:

In an increasingly globalized, competitive and dynamic world, issues of sustainability, diversity, information technology, social media, millennials and impact are shaping the expectations, anxieties and debates in universities across the globe. In many instances, university presidents, deans and other academic leaders are forced to critically rethink the historical mission and vision statements and actual outcomes of their institutions to respond to contextual issues and aspirations. This note discusses the crucial role of mission, vision and values in academic leadership. In particular, it highlights their role in strategic decision-making in universities, which at times may involve certain trade-offs. The note discusses that with ingredients such as mission orientation, positive attitude, flexibility and collaboration, academic leaders may lead their institutions to excellence.

Contemplation of the critical role of mission, vision and values in setting the strategic direction and choices of an academic institution and the importance of their identification as a collaborative process across multiple levels. 2. Methods to promote and enable a positive attitude without necessarily compromising the genius of the ‘and’ principle.
