DESCRIPTION

ABSTRACT:

In this note, the authors will discuss some of the frameworks that have been developed to help universities understand how they may be able to have more effective and fruitful linkages with industry and community. These include the Triple Helix model and the notions of ‘engaged’, ’anchor’ and ‘entrepreneurial’ universities (these terms are defined in the note). The notion of communities of practice (COP) created through the use of knowledge transfer programs (KTP) has also been used to enhance the effectiveness of such linkages. Some examples of how universities in Pakistan have established linkages and engaged with industry and community are discussed. The authors conclude by focusing on the main challenges faced by universities in Pakistan in establishing effective linkages with industry and community along with some suggestions on how these linkages may be made more effective.
