DESCRIPTION

ABSTRACT:

This is a series of vignettes based on actual or close to actual events that are situated in the context of urban Pakistani workplaces and/or interactions with implications for the workplace. The topic is social identities and ethical dilemmas related to marginalized identities. The idea behind developing these comes from reading a series of vignettes on diversity issues published by Darden in 2002. The Darden vignettes were specific to the US and there wasn’t a Teaching Note to go with it. The situations described here are meant for (a) executive trainings on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) when DEI is part of a bigger umbrella program on leadership, management, strategy etc, or (b) as part of DEI, Business Ethics or Organizational Politics courses at the MBA/EMBA/Undergraduate level, or (c) the MBA orientation where there are a host of topics that students are introduced to briefly. The idea behind presenting these vignettes is to introduce DEI in terms of a spectrum of identities that a DEI program contextualized in Pakistan should address. DEI discussions in Pakistan at this point focus mainly on gender and sometimes on physical disabilities also, but class, caste, religious identity and mental health conditions are not discussed in mainstream DEI sessions.
