DESCRIPTION:

The ethical situations exercise is intended to get students to examine their personal ethical views and those of their colleagues in a variety of settings. The exercise may be used in the Islamic Ethics course or in other courses.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

The instructor should focus carefully on getting students to examine their own ethical norms while listening to others and analysing opposing viewpoints rationally. While my religious and philosophical knowledge is minimal, the situations offer the learned instructor to apply many religious ayats and western concepts to the analysis of these situations and as the basis of a personal ethical code. Debate and emotions often run high in such exercises and have to be delicately handled. The last time I taught the similar western exercise a student openly stated in class that she had revised substantially her opinion of a colleague and would never start a venture with her. Such instances, while providing great opportunity for student learning can be emotionally disturbing for many and must be handled appropriately.
