DESCRIPTION:
The case Styles and Trends (B) is designed to illustrate the many operational problems faced by start-up ventures in a country where the infrastructure is not in the position of supporting the needs of such firms. It illustrates the kinds of burden it imposes on the entrepreneur and the determination and savvy necessary to survive in such an environment. Amidst all the operational crises the entrepreneur must continue to devote time to strategic issues and this places an interesting managerial burden on the individual/s. In particular it raises the issue of expanding what appears to be a successful small scale operation into a major producer of quality garments. Even in the face of optimistic market conditions such a decision is made difficult by the problems that one of the entrepreneurs has had to face in managing the fledgling venture compounded by his not having the equity necessary for his share in the larger venture. The personal conflict that an entrepreneur had to undergo in raising funds from friends and family are also highlighted in the case. The case allows students to not only reflect upon the mind set, skills, and attitudes necessary to be an entrepreneur in Pakistan, but also to see parts of the actual financial plan for a large scale venture submitted to NDFC and to decide whether expansion would be worth it in view of the operating problems the firm has faced.
