In late January 1989, Mr Mohammad Ali Tariq, Governor Director of Husein Sugar Mills Limited (HSM), was reviewing the proposals for establishing an in-house computerised cane accounting system. Rashid Masih, Cane Accounting Officer, had provided Mr Tariq his accounting software and the required hardware. The proposal from JIMS Computer had recommended the purchase of a standalone micro-computer ‘LINGO 286-PC AT’. Second vendor, EGS, had suggested a faster micro-computer ‘ALR 386’. The third vendor, Systems Limited (SL), had proposed an IBM S/36 minicomputer. Systems Limited was a software development and bureau service company and had been processing the cane accounting for HSM since 1987. They had already been notified about the cancellation of their contract for the coming year. Hence, Tariq had to select a vendor quickly so that the in-house system could be fully operational before the start of the next sugar cane processing season in October.
