DESCRIPTION:

The technical note on women entrepreneurship in Pakistan attempts to provide an overview of the status of women entrepreneurs in Pakistan. Pakistan is the sixth biggest country in the world in terms of population (188 million), of whom 48 percent are female. Pakistan is the 10th largest country in the world according to labour force size. However, female labour force participation rate is just 22 percent in Pakistan. Women’s Total Entrepreneurial Activity (TEA) rate in Pakistan is the lowest in the world. It has declined further from 3 percent in 2010 to 1 percent in 2012. Mostly women entrepreneurs in Pakistan (72 percent) are necessity driven which implies that they are working mainly due to economic reasons. Women TEA in Pakistan is low due to non-conducive business environment in Pakistan. Challenges faced by women entrepreneurs include lack of technical skills and education, lack of financial resources, lack of confidence and fear of failure, social and cultural constraints and lack of role model and poor networking opportunities. This note also covers the role of government and non-government organization in promoting women entrepreneurship in Pakistan.
