DESCRIPTION

ABSTRACT:

Violence affects the lives of millions of women worldwide, in all socio-economic and educational classes. It cuts across cultural and religious barriers, impeding the right of women to participate fully in society (UN DPI, 1996). In Pakistan, domestic violence has assumed alarming proportions. Not only does our domestic setup allow men to show their power through the display of violence, but our legal system is somnolent on the issue. Pakistan’s laws governing domestic violence still remain undefined or rather, ‘in abeyance’ and so, violence of the kind reported daily in newspapers, goes on undeterred and 90 per cent of time, unreported (Rashidi, 2002). This paper discusses the current situation of domestic violence against women in Pakistan, and analyzes the causes and effects according to the gender perspective and suggests measures to reduce its prevalence.
