DESCRIPTION:

In 1986, Cotton Textile was still the most important sub-sector of the industry in Pakistan. It employed one-third of the total industrial labour force, accounted for about 30% of the industrial value-added and 60% of the manufactured exports. The industry was based on locally produced cotton, which continued to be Pakistan's main cash crop. Pakistani cotton was graded amongst the world's best cotton in short-staple length varieties. About 2.4 million hectares or about 10% of all cultivated land in Pakistan was under cotton cultivation. Cotton production had always been more than domestic requirements and hence, a significant quantity was exported.
