DESCRIPTION:

The need for food security and the economic value of agricultural products highlights their significance for all countries of the world, no matter what stage of development they may be. In Pakistan, agriculture has contributed about 24 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) and employed 47 percent of the national employed labour force. The agricultural sector earnings are estimated to comprise about 60 percent of the country's total export earnings, and agriculture employs 47 percent of the total workforce. The contribution of the agricultural sector to the GDP declined gradually from over 50 percent in 1950 to about 25 percent by 2000. The actual size of the agribusiness sector was much greater, given major industries and services involved with inputs into agricultural production, and then downstream with the trade, processing, and distribution of agricultural products. Agriculture has thereby remained the major GDP contributor; a significant portion of the Pakistani economy has remained dependent on farming and processing of major agricultural commodities.
