In 1992, 509 tanneries operated in the country, employing 19, 496 people. Export receipts for 1992 from tanned leather were USD 241 million (3.5 percent of Pakistan’s total exports that year). In 1947, at the time of independence, there were only 5 tanneries and leather goods manufacturing factories in Pakistan. These were located in Lahore and Multan. The number of tanneries increased to 30 by 1955, 48 by 1966 and 180 by 1981. The number of tanneries increased substantially in the 1980s, reaching 436 in 1991 and 509 in 1992. Of the 419 unites producing chrome-tanned leather, 288 (69%) were located in Punjab and 120 (29%) in Sindh (mainly in Karachi). The total 44.7 m sq. of leather processed in 1990 comprised almost equal quantities of hide and skin leather. Karachi tanneries had concentrated on processing skins while tanneries in Punjab had concentrated on hides. 90 percent of all skins but only 25 percent of all hides were processed in Karachi.
