DESCRIPTION:

This case is about a textile spinning mill. The senior management was worried about the company's quality performance and felt that the company could overcome its financial problems if it can could its quality. The senior management lacked an understanding of process variation; hence, they were demanding control over quality that was not practical. On the other hand the managers in the company were not educated enough to be able to distinguish controllable from uncontrollable variation. The case can also be used to highlight concepts like: Cost of Poor Quality, and the effect of top management attitudes and employee commitment on quality. 


LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

This case can be used as an introduction to process variation and control charts. There is enough data in the case to build control chairs. This case can be used to generate a discussion about: tolerance levels versus control limits, machine capability, types of control charts, their basics, implementation of control charts, as we as the results of interfering with the process when it is operating under normal variation versus abnormal variation.
