DESCRIPTION:
This note contains a brief description of the development of the paper and paperboard manufacturing industry in Pakistan, the environment that it operates in, and a short description of the production process. In 1947 there was no paper manufacturing project in the country. By 1993, there were 95 paper and paper board mills with a total installed capacity of 580,100 tonnes per annum. This included writing and printing paper, paper & board and Kraft paper. Capacity utilization was in the range of 50-60% of total installed capacity. Paper and Paper Board are two broad classifications of the same general product based upon difference in weight. Weight of paper varies from 10 gram to 125 gram whereas the product above 125 gram is classified as Paper Board. Being a commodity product used daily, paper and board forms the second largest industry after textiles. Consumption of paper and paper-board in Pakistan is very low owing to a low literacy rate in comparison to other developing countries. In Pakistan, paper consumption is 3.7 kgs per capita as compared to the world average of 40 kgs, and 303.9 kgs in USA.
