DESCRIPTION:
This is a case about the rise and fall of an international bank. Its theme is identifying and seeing a market niche to determine bank strategy.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
The main teaching objective of the Bank of Credit and Commerce Case is to show some of the success factors for a multinational bank, The case demonstrates that good marketing can be key in getting a bank established and in positioning it within the various banking markets, but marketing alone is not sufficient for ensuring long-term viability or success. A solid foundation, in terms of liquidity and asset management, plus adequate management controls and accounting systems are also neccessary. Note that consolidated financial information on BCCI is not given in the case because this is not available. The issue of a weak capital structure was to prove the basis of the bank's susequent collapse.
